Last Day In Venice

On our last day in Venice we decided to visit the Rialto Market, it’s a market that is under the Rialto Bridge. The last time we were here we missed the market, so we decided to head out early this time.  Walking up to the market you know you are in the right place because the smell of seafood is all around you.  There were people in abundance buying their ingredients for the day.  I wish we had a kitchen in our room because I would have purchased some of the fresh vegetables and fish.

There were patrons everywhere including the birds waiting for some kind of scraps to be tossed aside.

After looking at all of the fish we looked at the vegetables.  The peppers and mushrooms were amazing.  I just wanted to buy up the lot of them.  One of the things I ate for the first time here at dinner the night before was Roc salad. I loved the bitter taste of the lettuce so I was on the hunt to find out what roc salad was.  After much research, I found out that it was Arugula.  This is my new favorite lettuce.

After visiting the market we went to the water bus on our agenda for the day was a visit to the island of Lido.  My husband remembered hearing about the famous Lido Beach and wanted to go see it.

We arrived on the island and had lunch and then walked out to the beach.  I should have taken a photo of it because it was not quite the beach either of us was expecting.  It was very industrial and just kind of gross looking.  We thought maybe we were at the wrong location and decided to walk further down the beach.  I must say it did not get any better.  The one thing we came across was the Excelsior Hotel.  We ventured inside to look around.  This hotel was huge and beautiful, very old-timey.

The keys for the rooms were from a time long since past.  The hotel seemed pretty empty.  We were there in mid-October so well past high season, though from the crowds in Venice you would not know it was low season.  The dock for the Excelsior was pretty cool.  My assumption is that during high season the guests at the hotel come over from Venice and are greeted near over there by boats and whisked off to the Excelsior.

We took the long walk back to the bus stop and came across this amazing tree that had grown around this stone railing.  I thought it was pretty impressive.

On the boat ride back to Venice we saw people fishing in canals.  Though if I knew the fish I was eating was gotten from the canals I would stick to eating chicken.  The canals do not pleasing at all, the water is green and you often see trash floating in the canals.

It was sad to say goodbye to Venice but we were on our way to Levanto a town outside of Cinque Terre a place I had wanted to visit ever since I saw a photograph at a friend’s house in Denver in 2012.  We had an 8 hour drive in front of us in the morning.
