Tags: Bicycles Boats Flight Attendant Florida Greek Hella's Photography Photos Restaurant Sponges Springs. Tarpon Travel
I heard about Tarpon Springs about a year ago and never had a chance to get out there. Well, a few weeks ago we decided to take a drive out there. Mind you it’s about a 3 1/2 hour drive but a day trip none the less. I believe we left around 9am and were there shortly around noon. This town fishes for sponges and a lot of Greeks settled here. We pulled into the town and drove down the main road. Most parking was about $5 and we chose this option. There were a lot of people here probably because it was a beautiful Saturday afternoon. The first place we saw after we parked was this restaurant. Very Greek in my eyes.
We then walked down the river front where the boats were docked, on these boats was the most amazing grouping of sponges. The boats were loaded with sponges, it was pretty cool.
I believe they do give trips out on the boats but we were not staying for that though this guy was calling for people to go out on the boat. You can definitely see that these are Greek descendants.
I know looking at these photos he doesn’t look real but he was definitely real and asking people if they wanted to go out on the boat with his crew.
After walking through the town to get a lay of the land we decided that we were hungry. One of the restaurants we found was call Hella’s. The restaurant had 4 stars and 421 reviews. We figured it would be a good bet and it was pretty crowded. We did have about a 15 or 20 minute wait. The drinks were great and here are photos of the drinks and the food, by the way, we had flaming cheese so yummy. The dessert is a Strawberry Kok we didn’t have it with lunch we went back to the Hella’s Bakery, which is attached to the restaurant, and then I took it home and at it there. it was yummy!
While walking around town I noticed that they had several decorated bicycles. These were pretty cook especially the sponge one. I don’t know why they are decorated this way bit I thought it was interesting.
I would definitely recommend this town for a short visit. Though I would recommend maybe staying the night in the town or close by. They do have a sunset cruise that I would have liked to have taken and maybe the next time we go we will.
