Munich’s Viktualienmarkt

If you find yourself in Munich with a kitchen in your Airbnb or whatever type of dwelling you are staying in, then might I suggest you take a stroll over to the Viktulianmarkt.

When you first turn the corner, on the right-hand side, are a bunch of butcher shops.  You should know that the first butcher shop on the right has a great window display, but don’t try and take a photograph or you will have a German lady shaking her finger at you. Don’t get disappointed though, because there are several butcher stores on the block that you can take photographs that are similar to this one.  You know the type of meat you just want to take home and toss on the grill and listen to is sizzle.

I wanted to just buy stuff here and take it home and cook it.  Unfortunately, we were staying in a hotel that didn’t have a kitchen.

Before walking around the market you have to have a beer at the Biergarten.  They had both regular Bier and Radlers which are beer with lemonade.  You can also get two sizes of bier here there is a pint and a half pint.  I don’t remember what the cost of the bier was but they were worth it, also note they claim to charge you for the glass (rental) though the math didn’t seem to work out that way.  The biergaten was crowded with people on this very warm Saturday afternoon.  You will have to search hard to find a place to sit.  We ended up squeezing next to some German girls that were out on this sunny Saturday afternoon.   This was late April and it was almost 80 degrees.

After finishing the bier you can walk around the market and take a look at all of the amazing food.  There was Wasabi cheese and some orange cheese that looked weird.  I should have done a taste test but didn’t.

There is also a really cute tent that sells home things and dried flowers.

This was right next to the biergarten.  Walking past this we saw spices, vegetables (the biggest white asaparagus I have ever seen), olives, garlic

There was also unrecognizable fruit.  Let me know if you know what this is and if you’ve tried it.  Also, we saw this most adorable owl which I would have loved to have taken home and put in my yard but I was afraid it would break during transit.  They do have a webpage and will ship but I’m not sure if they will ship to the United States.
