My First European Vacation Since The Beginning of COVID-19

I know it has been a long time.  From well before COVID, I must blame my grand daughter.  Having a granddaughter live with you kind of puts a damper in the travel.

We have had several trips since my last post in 2018. We went to Portugal in January of 2019, which was an amazing trip that I will have to back and recap. We started at Porto then went to Lisbon and did a few day trips. Then we went to Amsterdam twice right before COVID once in November of 2019 and then again in January of 2020, this was my last European trip.  We were going to go to Nice, France when COVID hit and everything locked down.  That was March 17th, 2020. I was just looking to plan our trip but luckily enough we had not booked anything.

The day the lockdown happened and they were cancelling flights my husband had to fly to Amsterdam and turned around and deadheaded back.  They were just going to get the crew that was there and bring back the passengers.  Then the world basically shut down.  Mostly anyway.  I had to quarantine for 10 days because he had been in another country.  We were hoping COVID would end in time for our trip to Nice which was supposed to be April 2020.  Well of course that never happened.  Throughout the balance of 2020 he flew all domestic trips.  Grateful to still be employed and not furloughed.  Our household didn’t go into lockdown.  He worked, I worked (being in manufacturing we had to make sure there was coffee for everyone).  My daughter worked in a childcare facility and still had to go to work.  So while everyone was locked in we still went about our normal routines.  Except restaurants were closed, there was no toilet paper and I missed my disinfecting wipes.  Then 2021 rolled around and we hoped things would get better.  Mexico was open so we went there for our vacation.  Stayed in the Riu Palace Peninsula, which was a great resort for a getaway.  Of course masks were required for dinner and anytime indoors.  They were very stringent about this.  There may have been a time or two when I stood up without a mask and had a waiter or waitress come to me and remind me to put on my mask.  We enjoyed this resort so much we returned a few months later to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary.

Now we are in September 2021 and we are flying to Madrid.  It is a few weeks after the EU has suggested that Americans not be allowed to come enter the European Union.  This is a country choice and Spain has obviously not agreed so we are able to go since we are fully vaccinated.  We took our COVID test the night before we left and and passed or failed.  Well, obviously we tested negative that is the important part.  We are currently on the plane.  We are heading to another Riu hotel this time in Torremolinos outside of Malaga. We will land in Madrid and rent a car and drive the 5 hours to Torremolinos this should be fine so long as someone (my husband is the driver because I don’t drive stick).  Here’s hoping everything goes as planned. This us on our way I will write more when we return.
